The comment posted by Tom McNulty in 2 February entitled "Women in combat no reason for joy" was right on the mark. As a retired military officer with over 20 years of active duty in numerous assignments serving with some exceptional female soldiers, I can confidently say that America is not ready for this. In my opinion, neither are the majority of women in the services. Equality has no place on the battlefield except death and when the body bag count begins to include a higher percentage of females we may have a different perspective of what real equality looks like and reveiw this policy. There are some occupations that really are gender specific.
After fifty years for sure and maybe only twenty five it will seem normal. I guess we will have to pay more attention to troupes of baboons and analyze how they conduct warfare. Do they consider gender? Then we can deduce if mankind is progressing in its thinking and behavior or regressing.
This is a political move to gain support of women's rights groups. These women will be forced to meet the male physical fitness standards, not the current easy female requirements. Very few will have the physical ability to meet the male standards.
