APEX Awards nomination deadline Wednesday

The July 1 nomination deadline is approaching for the 2020 APEX Awards, which recognize outstanding women in the Greater Fort Myers community who excel in the areas of professionalism, philanthropy and leadership.

Nominees must be current members of the Greater Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce, which coordinates the APEX Awards through its Women in Business committee. Nominations can be submitted online at APEX-awards.

All nominations received by July 1 will be evaluated and the top five finalists will be announced during Women in Business' monthly networking session on Sept. 2 at the Crowne Plaza at Bell Tower in Fort Myers. The Women in Business committee will recognize each finalist and name the recipient of this year's APEX Award during a gala dinner on Nov. 13 at The Westin Cape Coral Resort at Marina Village in Cape Coral.

The 2020 APEX Awards program is being co-chaired by Tracy Siekmann and Kelly Talamo. The 15th annual APEX Awards dinner is presented by Sanibel Captiva Community Bank.

Aloia Roland expands family law practice with addition of Encalada

Aloia, Roland, Lubell & Morgan, PLLC has announced that attorney Samantha Encalada has joined as the firm's newest associate attorney.

Encalada was admitted to the Florida Bar in April 2020. She was conferred her juries doctor in December 2019 at Ave Maria School of Law. She holds a bachelor of science in business management with a concentration in entrepreneurship from Florida Gulf Coast University.

While in law school, Encalada served as president of the Elder Law and Estate Planning Association, vice president of the Women's Law Association and was involved on the Moot Court Board.

Capps appointed to the Condominium and Planned Development Law Certification Committee

The Pavese Law Firm this week announced attorney Charles Capps has been appointed to the Condominium and Planned Development Law Certification Committee.

Leading Edge Benefit Advisors hosting virtual 5k fundraiser to benefit United Way

Leading Edge Benefit Advisors, LLC., is partnering with the United Way to host their first ever virtual 5k fundraiser.

The fundraiser started last Saturday, June 20, and goes through Monday June 29.

The United Way of Lee, Hendry, Glades, and Okeechobee counties has been actively supporting community members in need as COVID-19 has made its way through the state and impacted many individuals and families financially. However, as the need rises, additional resources are desperately needed to continue serving those affected and most vulnerable. Therefore, the team at Leading Edge is calling for community participation in this 5k fundraiser.

Participants can walk or run in support of the United Way any time between through June 29. Registration is $25 for adults and $15 for children under the age of 18 and includes a complimentary event T-shirt!

Awards will be announced via email on July 1 and given to top finishers in individual and group categories. Finish times will be documented by participants utilizing free fitness apps such as RunKeeper, UnderArmor, MapMyRun and Garmin. All participants will submit their time by taking a screen shot of their tracking app and emailing it to no later than 11:59 p.m. on June 29.

Henderson Franklin welcomes five summer law clerks

Henderson, Franklin, Starnes & Holt, P.A., has welcomed five law students: Taylor Bollt, Steven Gendreau and Corey Roberts from Stetson University College of Law; Nicholas Oliveri from Florida State University College of Law; and Daniel Pietaro from the University of Florida Levin College of Law. They will supplement their law school experience with "on the job" training working as clerks in multiple practices.

As part of Henderson Franklin's Summer Associate Program, they will attend live and virtual hearings, trials, depositions, mediations, arbitrations and meetings with clients. They will also perform research, assist in the drafting of pleadings, discovery, and analyze various legal issues.

Each summer associate is paired with a Henderson Franklin attorney mentor who assists the summer associate with the transition from a law student to a lawyer.

Global economist to provide Southwest Florida with a glimpse into future

New York based global economist James P. Sweeney, who travels internationally to share economic insights with world business leaders, will be the keynote speaker at the Above Board Chamber of Florida's webinar, "Economic Recovery after COVID-19," to be held on Thursday, July 9, from 4-5:30 p.m. Sweeney will provide the business community with his view of the current state of the economy here in Southwest Florida, the nation and globally and what we can likely expect the future to hold.

Sweeney is Credit Suisse's chief economist and regional CIO for the Americas. He manages a 35-person economics department spread worldwide. His written topics focus on the global and U.S. economies, particularly on global industrial production and the workings of the global financial system.

He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Economic Club of New York, and the National Committee on the United States-China Relations. Sweeney received his master's degree from the London School of Economics and a bachelor's from Florida State University.
