Contact Information: Tom Giles, Avalon Engineering, Inc., Tom@avaloneng.com

Your Business at a Glance:

What you do: We perform civil engineering, planning and permitting for projects ranging in size from small single commercial users to very large commercial and industrial complexes, utilities designs covering several square miles, miles of local streets and major divided highways.

Unique Niche: As the oldest and largest civil engineering firm in the city, we are the 500-pound gorilla in one of the fastest growing cities in the state. The Cape is less than halfway to a population build-out.

Bragging Rights: Our firm has performed our services for over 4,000 projects in the last 40 years in the Cape and Southwest Florida. Most of the largest projects: City Hall, Tarpon Point, Cape Harbor, Sandoval, Entrada, Cape Hospital, Oasis schools, the spreader waterways (North and South), State Route 78 widening, Santa Barbara Boulevard widening, Del Prado Boulevard widening, 23 square miles of the utility expansion project, just to name some of them.

Where you see your business in five years: Still anchored in Cape Coral, where we were created, serving a great city and perhaps more of Southwest Florida. Hopefully the economy will remain consistent with our growth rate, we will grow with it. We are slowly becoming an employee-owned firm, which will insure the firm's longevity.

About you:

Describe yourself in one word: Optimist

Hero, Role Model or Mentor: Hero is my wife; role model is James Matey; mentor is James Powell (deceased).

Person you'd most like to meet: Years ago, I had dinner with Donald Trump, but I would most like to meet President Donald J. Trump.

Book that changed your life: "Neothink" by Mark Hamilton.

Best business advice you've ever received: Never stop developing relationships.

Biggest risk you've ever taken: Starting Avalon Engineering 40 years ago.

Personal passion: Watching my personal family and business family grow and develop into the best it can be, with or without my help.

Guilty pleasure: Golf, I should do something I could be better at doing, but it helps relieve some of my frustrations that develop within everyday life.
