April 15, 2020
Cape Coral Daily Breeze

For the third year in a row, Anna Grace Swanson took Best of Show in the 2020 Florida Junior Duck Stamp competition, which was recently judged by virtual means at the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel.

Swanson's portrait of a red-breasted merganser took first place among 918 entries from throughout the state. Anna is an 11th-grader at Temple Christian School in Titusville.

The Junior Duck Stamp program began on Sanibel, next door to the refuge at The Sanibel School. Art teacher Jaye Boswell started it as a way to teach her students art and natural science at the same time.

Boswell still often serves as one of the judges at the competition.

The competition later then became a national program, run out of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service.

The J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge is at 1 Wildlife Drive, off Sanibel-Captiva Road, on Sanibel. For more information about the refuge, visit www.fws.gov/refuge/jn_ding_darling/
