Cape Coral Daily Breeze

American Legion of S.W. Florida Post #90 in Cape Coral will be holding a blood drive to benefit the Lee Health system Saturday, Jan. 18, from 1-5 p.m.

Post #90 is at 1401 S.E. 47th St., and the goal for this drive is 25+ units.

All blood donated goes to patients in Lee Health hospitals: Lee Memorial Hospital, HealthPark Medical Center, Golisano Children's?Hospital of S.W. Florida, Gulf Coast Medical Center and Cape Coral Hospital.

Lee Heath's Blood Center also services the Level II?Trauma Center at Lee Memorial Hospital and the Regional Cancer Center at The Sanctuary.

Just one pint of blood can help save the lives of several people. Lee Health needs over 800 units of blood each week to treat patients.

To donate blood, you must weigh at least 115 pounds, be at least 17 years old (16 with parental consent), be in general good health (no colds, flu, sore throat, etc.)?and provide a photo ID with your date of birth (if you are a new donor).

Those donating blood will receive a thank you gift, plus a wellness health checkup at no cost: pulse rate, blood pressure, body temperature, hemoglobin (iron level), blood type and cholesterol level.

New studies show that donating blood improves a person's health. Regularly donating blood helps men in particular to reduce the amont of iron in their blood. It can reduce their chance of heart attack by 88% and regular blood donation can lower the risk of severe cardiovascular events such as a stroke by 33%.

During its last blood drive, American Legion of S.W. Florida Post #90 had 28 donors who contributed 24 totsl units of blood.
