Bishop Verot wins opener at Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas

The Bishop Verot Vikings (6-1) captured their opening game in the Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas, 63-57, over North Las Vegas (Nevada) Mojave Wednesday.

Bishop Verot faced Pasadena (California) Maranatha on Thursday in the second round of the Premier Division of the tournament.

Boys basketball

Mariner 63, Cypress Lake 59: A big second-half comeback lifted the Tritons (5-2, 1-0 District 5A-11). Cypress Lake held a 38-27 advantage at the break and 43-41 after three quarters. The Tritons will be on the road Thursday against Lehigh.

Ida Baker 74, North Fort Myers 71, OT: A furious Red Knights comeback in the fourth quarter overcame a 12-point Bulldogs lead before Ida Baker (5-2) defeated North Fort Myers (1-7) in overtime. Both teams are scheduled to play Dec. 26-28 in the Sunshine Showdown at North Fort Myers High.

Girls basketball

Mariner 67, Cypress Lake 18: The Tritons scored the game's first 28 points. Alexia Poposki scored 15 for Mariner, while Naomi Darrett had 11, Carlee Groneveld and D'Yanis Jiminez 10 each. The 9-2 Tritons travel to Lehigh on Thursday.

Lely 67, Oasis 35: It was a tough night for the Sharks (4-6) against a 9-1 Trojans squad. Oasis plays Jan. 7 at Golden Gate.

Boys soccer

LaBelle 8, North Fort Myers 1: North Fort Myers (1-12) is idle until a Jan. 9 home match with Bonita Springs.
