Time to fall back

November 1, 2019
By H.I. JEAN SHIELDS - Garden Club of Cape Coral ( , Cape Coral Daily Breeze

Sunday is the time to turn back the clocks for a few months. Fall back one hour.

Not sure it does too much good, however, the Sunshine State still legally has to do it again. A federal government holdup is the cause of the state of Florida's request for not moving our clocks back and forth every year. Not an unusual problem in our world these days.

We really need a way to turn off the heat. In case you have not noticed, we are breaking a whole bunch of heat records in our Southwest Florida region. A lot!

A hot Halloween? That was the first time ever for us.

There is still lots of gardening to do, and a bunch more programs will continue at Rotary Park, in the Cape, sponsored by the Lee County Extension and Lee County Master Gardeners.

* Nov. 8: Container Gardening.

Pot gardening is fun, beautiful and not so low down as planting in the soil. I do like that idea. It is really easy when you know how and pot gardening is popular right now.

Sorry Master Gardeners, couldn't resist writing that.

* Florida Rain Gardening, Nov. 22, and Growing Orchids 101on Dec. 6.

I am vague about rain gardening, looking forward to that one.

Orchids, oh yea, I need advice about those lovelies. I really do have several, and they bloom, when they want to. I would like to think I am in control NOT!

The programs are all free and it is a good idea to register by calling 239-549-4606.

Programs start at 9 a.m. There will be expert speakers and information and you will be able to ask questions. Bagels, coffee and water will also be available. You may even bring your own favorite cup.

Again, this series of programs is free and I intend to attend -- never too old to learn!

Happy gardening till we meet again.
