New trash collection contract should include better bulk pickup

September 27, 2019
Cape Coral Daily Breeze

To the editor:

I moved to Cape Coral four years ago to be near my daughter and grandkids.

I soon noticed the amount of bulk trash on any given day all over the Cape. I don't know if it's just me, but I think this really gives a bad impression to anyone who may be visiting or even just passing through our city. It also is a pretty bad picture for those of us who live here. The concept of putting bulk trash out any time of the month is very foreign to me.

Where I lived on the east coast of Florida, Pembroke Pines, there were scheduled days to put out bulk trash. In my area it was the third Thursday of each month.

Waste Management concentrated their trucks on a scheduled area and in two days all the bulk trash in that area was picked up. Fines were issued to residents who did not comply with the schedule.

It doesn't look good for our city when on any day of the month you can see a toilet, soiled mattresses or other large items piled on the side of the street waiting for pickup.

This could be brought up in the upcoming negotiations as a possible solution to our current bulk trash problem. A neater, cleaner looking city will be much more attractive to potential new residents and future investors.
