Planning continues for annual Walk Down Memory Lane event on Pine Island

Current and former island residents invited to Matlacha gathering

Lifelong Pine Island resident Barbara Howard is once again putting together the annual Walk Down Memory Lane Reunion event scheduled for this Saturday July 6, the first Saturday after the Fourth of July celebration. The get-together will be held at Matlacha Park in the old fire house building (Art Building).

"This event has been going on for over 20 years," Howard said. "This is for and about anyone who ever lived on Pine Island. We all get together to come home, catch up and visit with old friends."

Howard, a Pine Island "native," said the island hasn't changed too much over the years and still has that Old Florida feel.

She said she wants to draw people back to Pine Island and Matlacha, many of whom left the island years ago.

"A lot of people left the island after the fishing net ban," Howard said. "Commercial fishermen couldn't make a living like they used to and a lot of people moved to find work."

Howard asks that you contact anyone you know that lived on or around our wonderful Pine Island and invite them to come.

"It's heart-warming to see family and friends get together again, catch up and share stories and pictures," Howard said. "It's just a big Pine Island family reunion. This event is for everyone, so please come."

Attendees are encouraged to bring a potluck dish to share. Lunch is served at noon.

For additional information, call Howard 239-440-7965.

"If I don't answer, leave a message. Hope to see you there."
