North Fort Myers Babe Ruth to host District tournament

June 5, 2019
By CHUCK BALLARO (news@breezenewspapers.com) , Cape Coral Daily Breeze

The North Fort Myers Community Park and North Fort Myers Babe Ruth will once again play host to the Babe Ruth District 15 championships.

The event is set for this weekend, with the hope of doing even better than last year and that the rain won't wash things out for three days, also last year.

Teams from Sanibel, Cape Coral, Clewiston, Punta Gorda and Naples will come to the park to battle it out for championships in five age groups -- 6U, 8U, 10U, 12U and 14U -- on the big field, with the winners going to Ocala next weekend and the chance to play in state tournament.

Last season was perhaps the most exciting tournament in years, as North Fort Myers captured the 6U and 8U titles, with the latter team having to win twice by scores of 6-2 and 8-5 and wait out rain delays to finally win on a Monday evening.

The success of North's teams, especially in the younger divisions, works out well for them, as they have an extra year under their belts which should make them more competitive this year.

North showed that at the Spring Fling, with its teams winning three of the five divisions, with a team from the Czech Republic winning one of the two North didn't win.

Regardless of the result, both of North's 8U teams will travel to Ocala, from June 12 to 16, for the state qualifier tournament. If any of the teams win the district or state qualifier they will move on to the state championships at various locations the last weekend of June.

Especially exciting was the deeper field, with Punta Gorda and Alva fielding All-Star teams for the first time in years, and expected to field them again this year.

Play will begin Friday night, weather permitting, with games all day Saturday and Sunday. If the weather holds out, as it remarkable has so far this summer, the tournament should end late Sunday afternoon.
