Coaches select All-Cape Coral Baseball Team for 2019

The baseball coaches from Cape Coral, Ida Baker, Island Coast, Mariner, North Fort Myers and Oasis high schools recently got together to select an All-Cape Coral Baseball Team for 2019. In making the selections, the coaches nominated the players by position and then voted to rank each player as first place, second place, third place, etc.

Three of the players were unanimous selections for their individual positions. Ida Baker catcher Mac Moise, Mariner first baseman Gavin Walker and Mariner second baseman Jimmy Meredith all received the top ranking from all of the voting coaches.

Moise hit .324 on the season with 9 doubles, 2 home runs and 13 RBI for the Bulldogs. Walker hit .366 with 7 doubles, 1 home run and 33 RBI. His teammate, Meredith also shined at the plate, hitting .418 (and a season-high 41 hits and only 2 strikeouts in 98 at bats) with 6 doubles, 15 RBI and scoring a city season best 33 runs.

Two other players received five top ranks with one second place: Mariner shortstop Alex Freeland, who hit .273 with 4 home runs, 25 RBI and scoring 32 runs, and Ida Baker utility player Austin Crothers who hit .327 with 10 RBI.

The top rated pitcher, with five top ranks and one third, was Island Coast's Chase Chat-man, who pitched 60.2 innings on the season accumulating a 8-2 record with one save with 106 strikeouts. He also pitched 3 no-hitters and had an earned run average of 1.15.

Right behind Chatman was Tritons' standout hurler Meredith, who was 8-0 on the season with a 1.35 ERA. He was followed by Baker's Liam Perry (8-0 record, 1.80 ERA) and Mariner's Lou Alberro (9-1, 1.54 ERA)

Alberro also earned the top rating for third basemen. He hit .310 on the year with 4 doubles, 2 triples and 27 RBI.

Finishing runner-up to Alberro was Cape Coral third baseman Allen Guerrero, who hit .321 on the year with 10 doubles, 1 home run and 13 RBI. Ida Baker's Jarred Pinto earned the third spot on the list with a .250 batting average, 15 RBI and 20 stolen bases.

In the outfield, Island Coast's Chatman earned the top rank. He hit .286 on the year with 6 doubles, 5 home runs and 18 RBI.

Backing him with second and third rankings, respectively, were Ida Baker's Tucker Mixon and Mariner's Jaylen Youngs. Mixon hit .351 with 3 doubles, a triple, 18 RBI and 17 stolen basses. Youngs hit .367 with 3 extra-base hits, 18 RBI and scored 29 runs.Ida Baker's Trey Koza (.329 avg.) and North's Robert Tejeda (.388) earned high marks.

Rounding out the top spots were:

At catcher, Island Coast's Mason Schwei-zer was second with a .352 average, 6 doubles and 12 RBI, and Mariner's Barron Northorp with a .256 average, 5 doubles and 11 RBI.

At first base, Cape's Ashton Hillard was the runner-up with a .268 average with 15 RBI, and Ida Baker's Carson McNeely earning third with a .246 average and 10 RBI.

At second base, Cape's Matt Theofel was second with a .364 average.

At shortstop, Ida Baker's Nick Richir was second with a .305 average with 5 doubles, 1 home run and 10 RBI, and Cape Coral's Danny Valdes was third with a .294 average, 2 home runs and 13 RBI.
