Local squads fall in tournaments, winter seasons come to a close

The winter sports seasons officially came to a halt last week as the local teams remaining in the basketball and soccer state playoffs tournaments all fell. Here are the highlights of the final games:

Girls basketball

Clearwater 54, Cape Coral 44: The Seahawks' year ended at 20-9 after falling to the 20-1 Tornadoes in the opening round of state tournament play. Charlotte (20-6), which defeated Cape Coral in the District 7A-10 title game, will face Clearwater in the second round after beating St. Petersburg Northeast 56-49 on Thursday.

Class 6A Regional

Bradenton Southeast 72, Mariner 28: Naomi Darrett had 14 points and seven steals, but the Tritons fell in the first round of the state playoffs. It was Mariner's first girls basketball playoff game since 2002.

Class 5A Regional

Tampa Brooks DeBartolo 58, Bishop Verot 39: The Vikings had only one loss in their first 24 games, but lost the last two to end their season. Bishop Verot (23-3) was upset by Neumann in the District 5A-10 final, and then fell Tuesday in the first round the state playoffs. Brooks DeBartolo (21-7) advances to meet Tampa Catholic, which eliminated Neumann.
