Cape Coral Daily Breeze

A late evening traffic crash Wednesday snarled traffic on Chiquita Boulevard, and resulted in the first Cape Coral traffic fatality of 2019.

At 10:06 p.m., Cape Coral Police patrol officers responded to a two-vehicle traffic crash in the 3300 block of Chiquita Boulevard, South. Due to the severity of the crash, the roadway was shut down and a Ping4alert was issued warning drivers in the area.

According to the police report, a 2001 Toyota Corolla, driven by Charles Yves, 69, of Cape Coral, was driving north on Chiquita when the vehicle left the roadway to the left, entering the grassy median and striking multiple construction signs and a posted directional sign. The vehicle then proceeded into the southbound lanes of Chiquita where it struck a southbound 2019 Subaru Ascent SUV, driven by Michael Grisanti, 36, of Fort Myers.

Yves suffered fatal injuries in the crash, police said, while Grisanti was uninjured.

Alcohol or drugs are not a factor in the crash, police said.

CCPD major crash investigators, forensics and a victim's advocate were all summoned to the scene.
