The language of nationalism

January 11, 2019
Cape Coral Daily Breeze

To the editor:

Donald Trump wants to make America great again. He uses nationalistic language to incite fear and make people yearn for the days when whites were the majority, minorities were suppressed and civil rights were tenuous. Nationalistic language encourages fear and insecurity. Donald Trump uses power to assuage his own fear and uses fear against others to bolster and maintain his power. Trump and his followers want to deny the changes that will only continue to emerge and progress as the formation of a more diverse and holistically better democracy develops.

The lessons of Adolf Hitler have educated people to recognize fascism.

Trump has incited fear and further divided the nation. He exhibits classic fascist characteristics. Many recognize Trump for his dictatorial persona and speak out against him vociferously. Trump's covertly sinister fascism is being uncloaked as his layers of insecurity are incrementally stripped away.

Do not be hoodwinked by Trump's vacuous rhetoric. Question his intentions, morals, core values, and his presidency. In 2020, elect a non-tirade-tweeting president. Elect someone who is a progressive thinker and a skilled orator with global sensitivities. Elect someone who can stand before the nation and speak a unifying language.
