Palmetto Ridge swamps North Fort Myers in Southwest Florida Sunshine Showdown

The second annual Southwest Florida Sunshine Showdown tipped-off Thursday as eight high school basketball programs from across the region took to the court to prove their supremacy.

The hosting North Fort Myers Red Knights (2-8) faced off against Palmetto Ridge (2-5) in an opening round contest that saw the Bears overwhelm North, 97-58.

"They shot the ball incredibly well," said North head coach Leland Clifford of Palmetto's offensive performance. "We switched defenses a few times. They got comfortable early against our two-three zone, so we tried to come out and trap. They did a great job of getting the ball to the middle, and finding the shooter on the other side. We didn't do a good job in taking the middle away."

North Fort Myers senior Caden Chisholm attempts a finger roll layup in the Red Knight's 97-58 loss to Palmetto Ridge in the first round of the Sunshine Showdown Thursday night.

Palmetto Ridge's Kamonte Grimes lit up the scoreboard for the Bears, as his 37 points in three quarters led all scorers, including nine 3-point field goals.

"He had a great night tonight, he took advantage of our mistakes," said Clifford.

Danny Amador chipped in 19 for Palmetto Ridge as well.

For North, senior Caden Chisholm had an impressive night offensively and defensively, as the 6-foot-3 shooting guard dropped 27 points, including five 3-point buckets.

"Caden has had a very, very good year," said Clifford. "What I love about him is that in Florida nowadays, he could've gone anywhere. He could've gone somewhere else, walked right into a program and just gone the easy route. He was with North Fort Myers for three years. He wanted to be part of something new. This is me and my assistant coach's first year here. We're setting a new tone, and he bought in right away. He wanted to be the guy who started the whole thing going, and in Florida that's rare."

Early on it looked as if Chisholm would keep the Red Knights in the game, as the score was 30-20 Palmetto after the first.

But as each quarter passed, the deficit grew larger.

By the half, Palmetto was up 14.

Thanks to a monster third quarter for the Bears, where they outscored North 32 to 14, including an 11 to 2 run to open the second half, Palmetto all but sealed the road victory.

Junior guard Jeff Krumm contributed 19 of his own for the Red Knights in the defeat.

North will take on Cypress Lake this afternoon.

"I like our chances going into tomorrow," said Clifford after the loss Thursday. "It's our home floor. We're ready to go. Coming into tonight, our goal was to go 2-1 this weekend, so, there's our one. Now we're going to go find our two."

Other Thursday Scores:

Fort Myers 58, Cypress Lake 39

Dunbar 84, Somerset Academy 41

Immokalee 73, Barron Collier 65
