Southwest Florida Fiddlers to provide music for special Contra Dance Wednesday at Faith Presbyterian Church

November 9, 2018
Cape Coral Daily Breeze

The Southwest Florida Fiddlers is providing live music for Contra Dancing at the community center of Faith Presbyterian Church Wednesday, Nov 14. Contra Dancing comes to Cape Coral from its roots in Appalachian Folk Dance. This style is easy to learn, and similar to Square Dancing.

"It requires no fancy footwork," according to Bill Morrow, instructor and caller for the dance program.

"Learning a new activity like Contra is definitely good for the brain, because new skills actually build brain cells, and add to the storehouse of cells. There are cells your brain needs as a guard against the aging process of dementia."

Morrow is a retired psychotherapist, who has taught courses in psychology in Southwest Florida. His present role as a dance instructor he sees as a direct follow-up to improved mental health.

"The research on brain health can best be summed up in the words of a neurologist who made it simple by saying,'Every time a canary learns a new song, he builds a new brain cell.' We don't talk psychology when we teach dance; we just dance and have fun," Morrow said.

The musicians of the Southwest Florida Fiddlers group provide a good beat that is easy to follow, yet not too fast for active seniors. They are all local hobby musicians, who enjoy doing this without pay. The group has been together for several years, and regularly meet in members homes for practice.

New members and seasonal visitors are always welcome.

Faith Presbyterian Church is a central location. The large gymnasium there will accommodate both musicians and dancers in comfortable air conditioning. No prior sign-up is needed, and $5 at the door covers the physical amenities. Singles, as well as couples, are welcomed. Starting time is 1:30 p.m., and an easy pace directed at beginners takes the dance to 3 p.m.

Questions may be directed to Morrow at 239-549-2232.
