Support free speech

To the editor:

The political antagonism is growing and that can only continue to get worse. It is unfortunate especially when it comes to freedom of speech.

Antifa is a black-masked organization supposedly financed by the left that will interrupt rallies and speeches by those on the right. They intimidate and shout down the speakers interrupting the assembly, much like the Brown Shirts did in the Hitler era. They were front and center on the burning and damaging of a building on the Berkeley campus last year. In Minnesota, a few were arrested for violence and vandalism. One of them happened to be the son of Sen. Kane who ran with Hillary for VP.

Maxine Waters has been joined by Hillary, Holder and others encouraging Democrats to shout down and confront prominent conservatives in restaurants, in stores and on the street. This is happening often enough that many prominent conservatives have to hire security guards. A good example is the confrontation in the elevator with Sen. Flake during the Kavanaugh hearings. A woman obstructed his passage from an elevator's open door and shouted at him for 10-15 minutes.

There are many examples of universities refusing or cancelling conservative speakers because it would create too much danger for the speaker and all those attending. It begs the question - don't universities have police that can protect free speech?

This clear violation of the First Amendment is dangerous for America. There are different views on government and they need to be argued so people have a clear understanding but preventing an opponent from expressing their views in a public forum and intimidating them during their private activities is nothing more than a replay of the Brown Shirts of the 1930s and we know where that led.
