Vote ‘Yes’ for half-penny sales tax for Lee County schools

November 2, 2018
Cape Coral Daily Breeze

To the editor:

On Wednesday the S.T. A. R. S. Community Forum in conjunction with the Lee County school District presented to the public a presentation, "Keeping You Informed".

The school district of Lee County along with the superintendent presented the discussion of the sales tax initiative, the office of diversity and inclusion, and the Multi Tiered System Supports (MTSS).

I commend them for bringing this very important information to the public.

The systems are in place and the superintended and his staff all working enthusiastically with implementation. There is honesty and self evaluation and they are hoping to bring the best education possible to the residence at this county.

On the sales tax initiative, the school district is in a position of being underfunded. The presentation on the capital budget clearly shows the hardship the district is presented with. The school district has been essentially abandoned by its two main sources of funding, the state and the county government. The capital budget has been underfunded (cuts of approximately $200 million per year) since 2007-2008 school year.

I have to conclude that the operational budget has also been likewise underfunded.

We are the fastest-growing county in the state, and impact fees have been drastically cut for a long period of time. Just recently they has been restored to 40 percent level, which also has a tremendous effect on the capital budget.

The school district has to seek funding either by borrowing money or implementing taxation. I urge you to vote "yes" on the sales tax initiative. The Lee County School District has done a great job, receiving many words of praise and is seen as a model by many, despite what the auditors said.

We must have equity in school funding. Restoration of funding by the state and county is needed. Remember the reduction in finding and the reduction in impact fees when you vote.
