Republicans careening down a one-way street

October 4, 2018

To the editor:

In March of 2016, President Obama nominated Judge Merrick Garland to fill the seat of Supreme Court Judge Antonin Scalia, who died unexpectedly.

Judge Merrick Garland was the Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. He was one of the highest ranking judges in the United States. There was a 10-month period for Congress to confirm him yet the Republicans declined to allow a hearing. There have been more than several accounts when a judge was nominated during an election year, yet they would have nothing to do with this great man of service to our country. He was marched around to Congress, door to door, asking for his confirmation, yet they declined to take the vote.

When President Trump came into office, he wasted no time to nominate Neil Gorsuch to that seat. Now, we have another appointee and the circus has whirled around scandals of Judge Kavanaugh's background.

The real reason behind President Trump's nominations are to control conservative opinions with no balance to our Supreme Court system. The Republican party has been driving itself down a one-way street, abandoning basic fundamental lawful values of integrity, respect, and well being for all Americans.

Remember who to vote for this November. Let's change the direction of the one-way street in Florida.
