"Volunteering is an excellent way to provide meaning in your life and help give back to your local community." - Peter Muggeridge

Marissa Logsdon, a volunteer at the Cape Coral Historical Museum, is living that quote. She is sharing her talents with the museum and giving back to the community that she has lived in since the age of 3 after moving here from Jacksonville, Florida. Marissa is a senior at North Fort Myers High and plans to major in illustration with a minor in creative writing.

How are Marissa's talents enhancing the museum?

She recently designed a T-shirt to sell in the museum Gift Shop. The design she created represents the newest addition to the museum's collection, which is a bone fossil found in Cape Coral from either a woolly mammoth or mastodon from the Proboscidea order of large mammals. The bone fossil was recently donated to the museum by the city of Cape Coral, which Mayor Joe Coviello and City Manager John Szerlag making the presentation.

When asked when she started to draw, Marissa's answer was simply, "I've been drawing for just about as long as I can remember! However, I only began to get serious about drawing in middle school - around 6 or 7 years ago. It's been a long time since then!"

This past summer she attended the Ringling College of Art and Design's Precollege Program and she said it was a wonderful experience being able to stay at the college and learn from the professors.

She added, "I learned a lot - some of which I'm even putting to use in this design project."

Aside from art, the ambitious senior said she enjoys reading - particularly about science and history, finding it all incredibly fascinating. But she said she not solely a bookworm, though; she takes a deep interest in video games as well, mainly those from Nintendo, such as Pokemon and Splatoon.

She said, "There's just something about the colorful worlds and curious creatures that truly inspires me to continue creating. Maybe one day, I could be an artist for projects like those, too!"

When asked what her best experience has been while volunteering at the museum she answered, "Pretty much all of my experiences here have been quite pleasant - though, I have to admit, being able to create a design for a public establishment is extremely exciting! I've got to say that this experience is certainly my best so far."

The Cape Coral Historical Museum was established at its current location in 1987 and since that time volunteers have been the heart the operation. Marissa is just one of the many volunteers that assist at the museum. She is joined by other volunteers that give tours, assist at special event, maintenance of buildings and historical preservation projects.
