Weissert of Florida TaxWatch to speak at REIS meeting

Florida's budget and spending policies and the implications of proposed tax amendments will be analyzed at the Real Estate Investment Society's Tuesday, July 10, luncheon meeting. Robert E. Weissert, Esq., executive CEO of Florida TaxWatch, will be the special guest speaker.

The program will address the Legislature's restructuring of funding for the state's economic development agency, Enterprise Florida, and tourism promotion agency, Visit Florida. Proposed tax amendments will also be discussed. Florida's current cap on non-homestead property tax rate increase will expire at the end of this year unless voters approve Amendment 2 on the November ballot, which will make the cap permanent. Unless approved, the increase is expected to cost property owners approximately $700 million annually. The ballot also includes Amendment 1, which would increase the homestead tax exemption by $25,000. Following the presentation, Weissert will respond to questions of specific interest to the real estate investment and development industry.

Florida TaxWatch (FloridaTaxWatch.org) is an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit taxpayer research institute and government watchdog. Weissert oversees the research agenda and coordinates efforts to increase government efficiency, improve accountability and enhance effectiveness.

The meeting is sponsored by Roetzel & Andress, and will begin promptly at 11:30 a.m. in the Osprey Room at Pelican Preserve's Clubhouse, on Treeline Avenue at Colonial Boulevard, one mile east of I-75 exit 136 in Fort Myers. Hawkeye Hotels and HOS Management purchase Fort Myers' Hotel Indigo in joint venture

Iowa-based firm Hawkeye Hotels, in a joint venture with Georgia-based HOS Management, has announced the completed acquisition of Hotel Indigo in downtown Fort Myers for an undisclosed sum. HOS will manage the property, which is the first Florida asset in Hawkeye Hotels' portfolio.

The seven-story hotel has oversized guest rooms and seven suites with hardwood floors. Guests have access to a rooftop pool and bar, in addition to a large retail space connected to the hotel.

Neither Hawkeye Hotels nor HOS purchased the retail space, but it will continue to operate for guests' convenience.

Hotel Indigo is located near Burroughs Home and Gardens, Centennial Park, Edison & Ford Winter Estates and IMAG History and Science Center. The Caloosahatchee River waterfront, Harborside Event Center, historic Lee County Courthouse and Space 39 Art Bar are within walking distance.
