Shell Factory to celebrate shells, 80th birthday

To call an event "80 years in the making" is a bit of a stretch, as very few businesses can make that claim. But when it does happen, there certainly is reason to celebrate.

On Sunday, from noon to 5 p.m., The Shell Factory & Nature Park, at 2787 N. Tamiami Trail in North Fort Myers will hold an old-fashioned carnival to mark the occasion, as well as celebrate National Seashell Day.

The event, which will be one of several to commemorate the anniversary, promises to be old-time fun for the entire family at old-time prices, with 25-cent admission to the nature park, carnival food and games and fun park prices that will take you back to 1938.

Rick Tupper, marketing director and CFO at the Shell Factory, said this will be the first huge event to commemorate the anniversary.

"We're going back to 1938 with our prices. Some of the food will be a quarter and the games will be 38 cents. We will have some great eats with a barbecue and elephant ears," Tupper said. "There will be a tent for food and two tents for games. It's going to be a fun day."

Tupper said there will be more events to celebrate the event, but they haven't been planned as of yet.

The carnival is one of two great events planned next week.

On Thursday and Friday, June 28 and 29, the Cape Coral Playhouse Summer Camp will present its rendition of "The Little Mermaid" in the Dolphin Room.

Dinner will be served at 5-6:30 p.m. both nights, with the performances to follow.

A matinee performance will be staged Saturday, June 30. Lunch will be served from noon to 2 p.m.; the performance will immediately follow.
