Upcoming hurricane seminars

Area residents looking for helpful hints to prepare for hurricane season have a number of seminars from which to choose.

Among those to be offered in Cape Coral and North Fort Myers:

* City of Cape Coral

The city of Cape Coral's annual Community Hurricane Seminar will be held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 7, in the Cape Coral Council Chambers. The seminar will be recorded and shown on the city website.

This year, the seminar will be held in conjunction with a "mini-expo" from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The Red Cross, Salvation Army, Cape Coral Building Department, West Coast Guard Auxiliary, CERT and Wink News will be among those in attendance. Speakers will include members from the Cape Coral Fire Department, Cape Coral Emergency Management, Cape Coral Police Department, Cape Coral Construction Industry, as well as two keynote speakers Volunteer Florida Emergency Management Director Ken Skalitzky and Dan Noah from National Weather Service Tampa.

Cape Coral City Hall is at 1015 Cultural Park Blvd.

* Lee County

Lee County Emergency Management will hold a hurricane seminar in Cape Coral at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 26. The free and open-to -the public info session will be held in the large meeting room at the Cape Coral Lee County Public Library.

The seminars will include information how to prepare your family and home for hurricane season, how to use new hurricane-related technology and how Emergency Management responds to hurricanes and other disasters.

* North Fort Myers

The Shell Factory will hold a hurricane seminar on Tuesday, June 5, beginning at 10 a.m.

John Patrick, chief meteorologist with ABC-7, and representatives from the Red Cross and Lee County Emergency Management will be among those offering information at the event to be held in the Dolphin Room. Representatives from StormSmart, Fireservice, and Home Depot will also be there to add to the program and answer questions people may have.

Speakers will cover topics such as what a hurricane is, when to evacuate, flood damage and storm surge, shelters, how to prepare a hurricane kit, what happens after a hurricane, insurance needs, and how to find relief assistance.

Tuesday's program will provide an emphasis on preparation for the hurricane season and recovery procedures should Lee County experience another hurricane. Additional information will be provided by United Way, Project Hope, and Lee County Crime Prevention,

A representative of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing Center will provide sign language.

Hurricane-related businesses will have table displays that feature hurricane preparedness items.

The program is free to the public. Parking is also free. Pre-registration is not required. Participants will be offered free Nature Park passes for the family and door prizes.
