A 13-year-old Cape Coral bicyclist suffered life-threatening injuries in a traffic crash with a pickup truck early this morning.

According to officials, Cape Coral police were called to the intersection of Del Prado Boulevard, South, and Hancock Bridge Parkway just before 6 a.m. today.

The police report states the victim was crossing Del Prado via Hancock Bridge Parkway along the crosswalk and was struck by the pickup truck.

The driver of the pickup truck, Jacob Sparks, 24, of Fort Myers, pulled into a parking lot immediately following the accident, called 911 and waited for police and EMTs to arrive.

According to witnesses in the police report, the light was green in the northbound lanes that Sparks was traveling in before the accident.

The victim's bicycle had no head or tail lights on and the rider was not wearing a helmet, according to CCPD.

Del Prado Boulevard was closed for some time as the accident investigation continued, and is now open.

The young victim sustained serious injuries and was trauma-alerted to a local hospital via ambulance, officials said.
