Gun violence or human violence?

May 11, 2018

To the editor:

With all this interest once again concerning gun laws I "researched" to see how many gun laws are already on the books.

I found this question posed and selected it for starters:

"How many federal gun laws are on the books?

There are 20,000 gun laws on the books. Various gun concerned groups have often cited the 20,000 gun laws that already exist on the books as reasons why more enforcement, not more legislation, is the answer to curb gun violence.

"Gun free zones are the fantasies of the well intentioned but ill informed."

We must look at what is possible and what is merely wishful thinking. We cannot stop acts of violence with firearms, or with knives or with baseball bats. Why? Because it is impossible! Making something against the law does not make the action go away. Many people do not care what the law says and for reasons known only to themselves they will commit any action they feel they should and the law be damned. The law is not even considered. Satisfaction of the emotion that is driving the act reigns. That is pure and simple.

We hear the phrase, "we need sensible gun laws"! And just what does that mean? We read the phrase over and over and the "magic bullet" phrase (please forgive just had to use that) has yet to materialize.

We seek to have "cradle to the grave" safety and that it not possible.

It is time to move on. That dog won't hunt.
