Let us celebrate our lifestyles

Happy 21st birthday to the Garden Club of Cape Coral, happy National Public Gardens Day and happy Mother's Day!

You think last weekend was happy time, check out this week. We have something for everyone to celebrate.

The Cape Coral Garden Club celebrated 21 years of happy and successful gardening with over 75 members celebrating with birthday cake and memories.

We have lost a few charter members forever, fondly remembered, as they started with meetings in a private home and now have over a hundred active members. A collection of growers, designers, and local community volunteers.

We have our newbies; so exciting to help them learn about the Florida seasons. Members exchange plants and gardening items, and lend a helping hand when a fellow gardener is in distress.

We tour around to other garden clubs and are active in state and national functions and classes.

Members will be taking part in the National Public Gardens Day open house at the Berne Davis Botanical Gardens, on Virginia Avenue in Fort Myers.

Other botanical gardens in the area will also be open - some free and some with special price reductions. The American Public Gardens Association created this day to celebrate and recognize the importance of botanical gardens, arboreta and public gardens.

Spring in Southwest Florida is blooming, in spite of a lack of rainfall, it never disappoints.

Mother's Day, wow, and a biggie. Mothers deserve a happy day. It is a bit commercial, that's the American way. Disregard that and remember mom loves a hug or kiss and a card just as much as a dozen roses. Well, almost as much. Love can be just a phone call away.

The weather man says we may have some rain this weekend, we will just have to love that as well.

The long hot summer is on the way so get out and enjoy life right now. Maybe buy a hat and some sunscreen, also. Life goes on.

Happy special days till we meet again.

H.I. Jean Shields is past president of the Garden Club of Cape Coral.
