Torres’ walk-off sacrifice fly leads Mariner over Ida Baker

In Monday' nights opening round of the District 6A-11 baseball tournament, Mariner earned 6-5 win over Ida Baker on a walk-off sacrifice fly by Xzavien Torres in the bottom of the seventh innings.

With the victory, the Tritons advance to take on Cape Coral today on the Seahawks' field.

Alex Freeland helped lead the Tritons to the win, earning the pitching win, allowing just one hit and zero runs over two innings. He also led Mariner at the plate, collecting three of his team's eight hits and driving in one run.

Jimmy Meredith hit a double and a single for the Tritons.

On the mound, Donnie Goodman pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief out of the bullpen. Louis Alberro was the starter allowing three runs on eight hits in 2 2/3 innings.

The Bulldogs lost despite out-hitting the Tritons 12-8. Leading the offense were Tony Rios, Nick Richir, Jarred Pinto, AJ Marinello and Tucker Mixon with two hits each.

Liam Perry was the starter for Ida Baker, allowing four runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings. Austin Crothers took the loss for the Bulldogs, allowing two hits and two runs in two innings.

Oasis 12 Imagine School 0: Lewis Evans had three RBI and Dennis Talarico improved to 8-3 on the season. The Sharks were set to play Bishop Verot in North Port.

District 6A-11

In other District action Monday, Cypress Lake defeated North Fort Myers, 3-2, and Island Coast cruised past Port Charlotte, 9-4. Today, Island Coast hosts Cypress Lake and Mariner goes to Cape Coral, the tournament's top seed.

In the Class 2A regional finals Thursday, Bishop Verot's girls came out on top in a closely contested match against Cape High, winning 4-1 and advancing to the state finals next week.

The Cape Coral boys tennis team swept the first four singles matches against Mariner to clinch the Class 2A regional championship and advance as a team to the state finals next week. This will be the first time the Seahawks' boys team has advanced to the state finals.
