Cheese’s triple-double helps FSW men top IMG

January 9, 2018
Cape Coral Daily Breeze

In front of nearly 1,500 home fans, including a pair of NBA scouts, sophomore Tyler Cheese recorded the program's first triple-double to help lift the No. 12 FSW men's basketball team to a thrilling 119-104 double overtime win over a solid IMG squad at Suncoast Credit Union Arena on Friday night.

The Buccaneers, who ranked No. 3 in the recent FCSAA NJCAA Region 8 Men's Basketball Coaches' Poll, move to 16-1 on the season and have won six straight.

The game was back-and-forth for most of the first half and part of the second. IMG then used a 13-2 run to take a 74-64 lead over the Bucs with 12:05 left in regulation. FSW fought back and got the defensive stops they needed, eventually tying the game at 92-92 (1:01) after Tra'Von Fagan's free-throw.

A layup from Eric Ayala gave the Ascenders a 94-92 lead with just 39 seconds left in the second half. On the next FSW possession, Anthony Murphy found Cheese for a mid-range jumper to tie things up a 94-94 (00:23). The Purple and Aqua went on to force a turnover, but Cheese's triple at the buzzer rimmed out and we were headed to overtime.

In the first OT period, the Bucs held a four-point lead on two occasions, but were unable to put the Ascenders away. Cheese had another shot at the buzzer, but was not able to knock it down and we went to another OT period (104-104).

The Buccaneers came out ready to finish things in the second overtime, holding IMG scoreless and picking up the 119-104 double-overtime victory.

Cheese finished with 40 points, 15 rebounds and 14 assists to record his first career triple-double and also the first triple-double in FSW history. He shot 13-of-27 from the field and knocked down 13-of-15 shots from the charity stripe. Sophomore ShanQuan Hemphill finished with 29 points and six boards, while Fagan tallied 13 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Charles Manning Jr. chipped in with 11 points, five rebounds and three assists, while Anthony Murphy registered 10 points, eight assists and seven rebounds.

The Bucs are back in action Wednesday, Jan. 10, when they travel to Tampa to face Hillsborough CC in the 2017-18 Suncoast Conference opener. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
