BackStreets to recognize active and retired law enforcement officers Tuesday

In honor of National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, BackStreets Sports Bar is thanking officers with free wings and a drink on Tuesday, Jan. 9. From 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., the bar will provide 10 chicken wings and a drink of choice to active or retired law enforcement officers who provide valid ID showing honorable service.

Each year, BackStreets serves free pizzas and drinks to service members on Armed Forces Day and Veterans Day. This is the first year it's participating in L.E.A.D., which falls on Jan. 9 of each year.

Live entertainment includes Keefe Klug on the patio 5:30-9 p.m., followed by karaoke 'til 2 a.m.

Angel Pasta now Ben Ali Foods

Angel Pasta, a Fort Myers-based vegan food manufacturing company, has undergone a total re-brand. The company has been in the research and development phase for one year and has already gained attention from domestic and international food service corporations. The move signifies a shift in business interests, beyond pasta products.

Soori joins Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute

Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute has announced that medical oncologist Gamini S. Soori, MD, MBA, FACP, FRCP, CPE, has joined the statewide practice and will be practicing at three locations: Fort Myers Colonial, at 8931 Colonial Center, Suite, 200, Fort Myers, FL, 33905; Cape Coral Cay West, at 1708 Cape Coral Parkway, West, Suite 10, Cape Coral, FL 33914; and Ft. LeeTran increases service to Fort Myers Beach as part of seasonal changes

Increased LeeTran service to Fort Myers Beach is among seasonal changes that has started effective Thursday, Jan. 4. The Fort Myers Beach Trolley service includes two routes:

* Route 490 has three trolleys that will travel between the Beach Park & Ride and Bowditch Park until 8:45 p.m., seven days a week.

* Route 410 has five trolleys that travel between Bowditch Park and Lovers Key until 10:20 p.m., seven days a week.

Route 490 will depart from LeeTran's newly constructed Beach Park & Ride, which opened Dec. 19. The new facility, 11101 Summerlin Square Drive on the corner of Pine Ridge Road, provides free parking for people to take the trolley to the beach. Passengers also can connect to LeeTran's routes 50 or 130 from the Beach Park & Ride.

The Beach Trolley is 75 cents, or $2 for an all-day pass.

Two additional increases in service beginning Jan. 4 include:

* Route 150 from Bonita Grand to Lovers Key State Park.

* The LinC Route 600, which connects Lee and Collier counties.

All seasonal changes extend through Wednesday, April 11.

Residents and visitors can plan their local explorations using the Ride LeeTran app for Android or iPhones or by using Google Maps and selecting the transit option.

Lee County Transit, LeeTran, is the public transit provider for Lee County, providing more than 3 million rides per year. LeeTran operates 26 bus routes during season, 23 bus routes during off-season, a paratransit service called Passport, and an employer vanpool program. LeeTran employs approximately 240 people and has a fleet of 50 full-size buses, 9 trolleys and 45 paratransit vans.

Miromar Outlets to hold National Anthem auditions

Miromar Outlets in Estero is holding a singing contest to find the next National Anthem vocalist(s) for an upcoming Minnesota Twins Spring Training game and to perform at a Fort Myers Miracle baseball game. Talented singers are invited to register and compete in the contest at 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 13, near Bloomingdale's The Outlet Store.

First, contestants must give a brief introduction and perform an a cappella version of the National Anthem in front of a panel of judges. Several participants will be selected and have the chance to sing live at a Minnesota Twins Spring Training game. Singers will also be selected to perform the National Anthem for the Fort Myers Miracle (Class "A" Affiliate of the Minnesota Twins).
