FGCU women new No. 1 team in Mid-Major poll

January 3, 2018
Cape Coral Daily Breeze

The FGCU women's basketball team is the new No. 1 team in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major poll after receiving 21 of the 31 first-place votes.

The Eagles, who also remain 19th in the latest NCAA RPI rankings, earned the fifth No. 1 ranking in program history. The 2015-16 team was the preseason No. 1 on Nov. 4 and also achieved the top ranking on Nov. 27, March 1 and March 8. This year, FGCU was ranked No. 2 on Nov. 22 and spent several weeks at No. 3. The program was also ranked No. 2 on Jan. 18, 2011, and the 2015-16 team also achieved the top ranking in the espnW mid-major poll multiple times.

"It is always nice to be recognized as one of the top mid-major teams," FGCU head coach Karl Smesko said. "(However), there is a long way to go and a lot of improvement that needs to be made."

FGCU rose two spots for two reasons. The Eagles upset No. 2 South Dakota State this past Friday in Alico Arena and No. 1 Green Bay was upset by Northern Kentucky on Saturday. Green Bay fell to No. 2 while South Dakota State is now third.

FGCU (14-3) will host Stetson (9-7) in the ASUN opener on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Alico Arena. Tickets can be purchased here.
