Cape Coral American Legion Post 90 holds flag retirement ceremony

The Cape Coral American Legion of Southwest Florida Post 90 held a flag retirement ceremony Saturday Nov. 4. Presiding over the ceremony was John Baker, the commander Post 90.

Those also in attendance included the Legion Auxiliary, Sons of the American Legion and the Legion Riders.

Kit and Marie Dyer hosted the event and allowed Post 90 to hold the ceremony on their property. The post presented them with a certificate of appreciation and a gift card.

This is a yearly event and flags were collected from both AL Post 90 and VFW Post 8463. This year the Legion collected over 3,000 flags compared to 2000 last year.

To qualify for membership in American Legion Post 90, a person must have served in one of the United States military branches during time of war. Membership in the Legion Auxiliary are the mothers, wives and daughters of a veteran, and to be a member in the Sons of the American Legion, one must be a direct descendant of an American veteran. To be a member in the American Legion Riders one must first be a member of the American Legion, Legion Auxiliary or Sons of the American Legion.
