Seahawks suffer first district loss against Pirates

The Cape Coral Seahawks couldn't stop the rain, and couldn't stop the Port Charlotte passing attack.

Cape Coral fell 30-12 to Port Charlotte in a driving rain at Cape Coral High School, falling to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in District 6A-10.

During letups in the rain, Paul Barnes burned the Seahawks with long scoring passes. Barnes hit three passes for touchdowns in the first half as the the Pirates led 24-0. The senior hit a fourth TD pass in the fourth quarter.

Port Charlotte's Chris Shatney caught three scoring passes from Barnes, of 47, 30 and 21 yards.

"I tell you, it looked like a carbon copy from last year," Cape Coral coach Larry Gary said. "We just could not defend that pass, especially the wheel route."

Two Barnes touchdown passes put Port Charlotte up 14-0 in the first period. Barnes and Shatney connected from 47 yards out on the second play from scrimmage. Later, TJ Luther hauled in a 31-yard pass from Barnes to score.

Barnes only threw five passes. All four completions were for touchdowns.

The defeat left Cape Coral tied with Port Charlotte in the 6A-10 standings at 1-1.

"We've just got to put this one behind us," Gary said. "We've still got a chance (in the district). We've got to play tougher down the line, North Fort Myers and Charlotte. Not to take anything away from Island Coast, but that's what we have to do."

The Seahawks moved the ball on the ground all night, rushing for more than 200 yards. Getting into the end zone was the problem.

Cape Coral moved inside the Port Charlotte 30 in each of its first three possessions, but stalled out each time.

Ricky Anderson was the workhorse for Cape Coral, running 25 times for 116 yards.

Problems on Cape Coral's special teams would put the game out of reach.

A muffed punt gave the Pirates a short field at the Cape 26 yard line late in the second quarter. On third and long, Barns and Shatney teamed up on a 30-yard TD pass with two minutes before halftime.

Following a very short punt that was returned to the Seahawks' 11, Derek McCormick hit a 26-yard field goal as the buzzer sounded to the the half.

Port Charlotte coach Jordan Ingman said the rescheduling of this game, postponed due to Hurricane Irma, was meant as a trap for his team. Ingman insisted that Cape Coral would only reschedule the game right after the Pirates had played North Fort Myers, which turned out to be a 27-23 North victory.

"Oh, absolutely, that's the reason they scheduled us," Ingman said. "They would only play us right after North Fort Myers."

The Seahawks, trailing 24-0 as the fourth quarter began, did pick up a couple of touchdowns in the late going.

With Cape Coral driving to the Port Charlotte 12 early in the fourth quarter, Ingman put his defensive starters back in to try to preserve the Pirates' shutout. Anderson and the Seahawks kept driving, however, with quarterback Dwayne Emilus getting into the end zone from 5 yards out.

Emilus had 84 yards rushing on 18 carries.

In the closing moments, Cape scored again after blocking a punt and taking over at the Port Charlotte 11. Adrian Canty punched it in from the 1 for a touchdown with 2:12 remaining.

A lightning delay at 6:10 p.m. wound up not having much effect on the game's start. The minimum 30 minutes went by, and the teams took the field for a brief warmup.

Cape Coral wraps up its stretch of three games in nine days on Friday with a home contest against Lehigh. A week later will be a district game, also at home, against Island Coast.
