Gators fall to 0-4 with loss to Panthers

Still no wins for Island Coast this football season, but perhaps some baby steps forward.

The Gators fell to 0-4 on the season Monday with a 36-6 loss at Cypress Lake.

Monday's game was the Gators' second of three games in nine days.

At least one small thing was accomplished by the Gators Monday night.

Island Coast put together a solid drive in the fourth quarter, resulting in the Gators' first points of the season. Trey Irick scored on a 9-yard run with 5:46 to play.

Actually, the Gators managed to accomplish a couple of things, since Island Coast didn't allow Cypress Lake to score any points in the second half.

"We haven't had a lot of success, so it's hard to get going," Island Coast John Schowchow said. "Once we get some good things going, I think we'll get more good things to build on. We're young, with sophomores and four freshmen playing in the first half.

"If everybody stays with it, the future's bright."

In the first half, Island Coast couldn't slow down the Cypress Lake passing attack.

"Yeah, we thought so," Panthers coach Richard Rode said. "We wanted to spread them out and get back to some of the things we've been trying to accomplish all year.

"I thought the focus early on was really good. I thought our speed and our athletes executed real well in space."

CJ Shedd hit four touchdown passes for the Panthers, connecting on 8 of 11 passes for 192 yards. Shedd didn't play the second half.

The game was played with a running clock in the second half after the Panthers rolled up a 36-0 lead at intermission.

Cypress Lake (2-2) took an early 7-0 lead when Jermaine Teague caught a Shedd pass, then battled his way down the sideline and through would-be tacklers for a 37-yard touchdown.

Another short pass from Shedd turned into a 53-yard Panthers touchdown as Kelsey Demps raced through and past the Gators and into the end zone.

Shedd also hit TD passes of 2 yards to Tim Addison and 43 yards to Cameron Nelson.

Island Coast had problems punting the ball, and Cypress Lake took full advantage. A high snap over the head of Island Coast punter Trey Irick set Cypress Lake up at the 1, where Chris Joseph punched it in.

Another high snap from punt formation resulted in a Cypress Lake safety.

"It's a long process, and I knew it was going to be a process," Schowchow said of building a program with a very young roster. "We're sticking to the course, and we just continue to go on our path and continue the steps we're supposed to take."

Both teams are playing three games in a short time, having lost one-sided games last Thursday and facing another contest on Friday after Monday's matchup. Island Coast goes to Riverdale on Friday, while Cypress Lake will be home for Bishop Verot.
