Due to the threat of Hurricane Irma's landfall in Florida and up the Eastern Seaboard, several FGCU athletics events have been affected this weekend.

The men's soccer team's home opener against VCU scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday has been canceled. The teams attempted to play the game at VCU and also at a neutral setting in Georgia, but the uncertain track of the storm led to the decision for cancellation.

Both the men's and women's golf teams will not travel to their season-opening tournaments. Both teams were supposed to head to Myrtle Beach, S.C., for events Sunday-Tuesday. As of Wednesday afternoon, the tournament is still on as scheduled, but FGCU will not compete.

The men's and women's cross country teams will not travel to the Stan Sims Invitational in Cartersville, Ga. - about 45 miles northwest of Atlanta. As of Wednesday afternoon, the meet is still on, but FGCU will not compete.

The volleyball team's tournament at Davidson (Friday and Saturday) and women's soccer team's games at Arizona (Friday) and Arizona State (Sunday) will be played as scheduled.

FGCU classes, operations and events were canceled for Thursday and Friday, and continuing through the weekend. A decision is expected to be made Sunday afternoon on if the university will reopen on Monday. An announcement will be made then.

Due to the potential power outages associated with Hurricane Irma, there is a chance that scores, recaps and other updates online and corresponding social media accounts could be delayed.

On a lighter note, Cape Coral native Holly Fritz was named the ASUN Conference Player of the Week on Tuesday. The transfer student from Florida State is the third Eagle in as many weeks to take home a weekly conference honor. It is Fritz's first award after scoring her first two collegiate goals and assisting on another over the weekend.
