Shell Factory to mark International Homeless Animals Day with adoption event

The Shell Factory is looking to do its part in helping out the area's homeless pets find a forever home.

This Saturday, the attraction will take part in International Homeless Animals Day with an animal rescue event from noon to 4 p.m., featuring all sorts of cats and dogs in need of a family.

Rick Tupper, CFO and marketing director at the Shell Factory, said the idea came from owner Tom Cronin, who saw there was a day especially for pet adoptions and wanted to participate.

"He was looking in the newspaper and saw it as an event day. We've done these before and were pretty successful," Tupper said. "It should be a real nice event."

This event will be different from Goldenfest, in that the Shell Factory will coordinate the show, as opposed to Goldenfest, where that organization runs it, he said.

Among the many animal welfare groups expected to attend include Lee County Domestic Animal Services, Bo Nose Rescue, A Roof for Roofus Rescue, Animals Refuge Center, Caloosa Humane Society, Fur n Tails and the Animal Rescue Center.

The Suncoast Aqua Dogs will be there, though they aren't expected to perform, and Up Beat K9 will also be there to do doggie activities, such as catching Frisbees and dog training.

The event includes free admission and all qualified adoption applications receive a $25 gift card.

After the event, there will be live entertainment from 4 to 7 p.m. The nature park, fun park and retail stores will be open, including many pet items.

Tupper said the event is new, so he hasn't set an adoption goal.

Tupper said this should be the last big event of the summer for the Shell Factory, but it won't be long before the first one of the fall takes place, which will be Nam Jam in September.

The Shell Factory and Nature Park is at 2787 Tamiami Trail.
