Relax, it’s summer

July 28, 2017
By H.I. JEAN SHIELDS (news@breezenewspapers.com) , Cape Coral Daily Breeze

I looked in my Oxford Desk Thesaurus, the perfect resource for home, school and office. I guess other newspaper columnists depend on a different book.

I decided the word hot might have a reference to summer heat. Not a word!

I did discover that there are over 100 words describing hot, plus some slang examples.

One slang example: "The hottest gossip is that he is marrying for the seventh time." I guess any time of year.

The actual word's much more interesting. There are some pretty intense suggestions. Many of which would not be applicable here. I myself do not want to get in hot water. Keep in mind, we are not growing in the garden right now, but are growing in our vocabulary.

A pretty innocent word "randy." I am not sure just why that is in the hot section, but it could be interesting.

"Scorching" is a word we can all understand this month.

Another very interesting word in the hot category is one that I am not going to print. Without anyone around to possibly explain it, not really knowing what it means, and my dear thesaurus not even explaining it.

Look it up.

It's too hot to garden so grab a chair, a rum tea cooler and read up on hot in your thesaurus.

Gardeners who have to garden now, keep hydrated, use sun screen, try some neem bug protection. Hats are not for women only!

Two events coming up the last weekend of the month are the local native plant sale that will feature butterfly plants and edible plants for people. Anyone who still needs a rain barrel, there will be a workshop from 9 a.m. to noon. $45, and you need to register ahead; call 239-549-4606.

It's at Rotary Park, Cape Coral, Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The annual caladium festival, a three-day event, is out of town in the lovely little town of Lake Placid. Make it a day trip!
