A Cape Coral woman injured in a traffic crash earlier this year has died from her injuries.

On Thursday, the Cape police reported that Diane M. Vivona, 60, of 523 S.E. 24th Ave., died on Sunday at Hope Hospice, where she was transferred for care following the March accident.

"The Cape Coral Police Department was notified by the Medical Examiner and a delayed fatality Traffic Homicide Investigation is being conducted," officials said via a prepared statement. "The Lee County Medical Examiner advised that Vivona's original crash injuries contributed to her death."

At 12:15 a.m. March 20, Cory M. Jakubuwski, 22, of 5425 Sands Blvd., was driving a Toyota Camry westbound on Cape Coral Parkway West and approaching the intersection at Southwest 23rd Avenue. Vivona was walking in the center of the westbound lane of Cape Coral Parkway, near the intersection.

According to police, Jakubuwski stated that he suddenly realized Vivona was walking in the roadway, but he was unable to stop in time to avoid a collision. The front of the Toyota collided into Vivona.

She struck the hood and windshield, and then came to final stop in the westbound lane of the roadway.

Vivona sustained serious injuries and was trauma-alerted to Lee Memorial Hospital.

Jakubuwski sustained minor injuries in the accident.

Police reported at the time that alcohol was not a factor in the traffic crash.
