Approximately 300 business leaders, non-profit organizations, city officials, family and friends raised more than $50,000 and donated more than 50,000 pounds of food during the annual SOS: Save Our Summer Feed the Cape kickoff event on July 13 at Dixie Roadhouse.

This exceeded the five-year anniversary goal and will go to the Cape Coral Caring Center to feed Cape Coral children and their families throughout the summer who rely on free or reduced lunch from the public-school system.

The Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral also took home the Smackdown championship belt for generating the most donations out of nine Cape Coral-based organizations. Others were Cape Coral Rotary Clubs, Cape Coral Construction Industry Association (CCCIA), 24th Avenue God Squad, South Cape Hospitality and Entertainment Associations (SCHEA), Hispanic Chamber of SWFL Foodies Group, The Men's Network, Council for Progress and the Kiwanis Club of Cape Coral.

More than $50,000 and 50,000 pounds of food was donated during the annual SOS: Save Our Summer – Feed the Cape kickoff event held July 13 at Dixie Roadhouse.

Christopher T. Spiro, CEO/Chief Creative Officer of Spiro & Associates, was the emcee for the night, which also included raffle prizes, such as a bicycle and gift cards, contributed by Southwest Florida businesses. Additionally, the bear mascot from Bruno Air made a special appearance.

"My fellow business leaders and I started this mission to help our community's children be children for as long as they possibly can," Spiro said in a prepared statement. "What we could have never foreseen was the amount of people this cause would touch and the volume of Southwest Floridians this campaign would attract. We are not only collecting food and money, we are showing those children we are behind them 100%."
