1st-place Miracle keep an eye on playoffs

The Fort Myers Miracle head into the final seven weeks of the Florida State League season atop the South Division standings.

Entering Thursday's doubleheader at Charlotte against the Stone Crabs, the Miracle (13-4, 46-39) led Bradenton by 2 1/2 games and Palm Beach, which captured the league's first-half division playoff spot, by 3 1/2 games.

Thursday's doubleheader became necessary when Wednesday's opener to the three-game series was rained out.

The Miracle return home to Hammond Stadium for a three-game weekend series with the St. Lucie Mets starting Saturday. Call it Tebowmania II just two weeks after the Mets brought former Florida Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Tim Tebow to Southwest Florida after his promotion to their advanced Class A roster from the low Class A Mets affiliate a few days earlier.

Once the Mets clear town after a Monday night tilt the Miracle go on the road to Bradenton for three games then return home to host Tampa for four games next weekend.

The Miracle play 24 of their final 50 games at Hammond Stadium where they are 30-14 this season and hoping to reach the playoffs for the first time since winning the league championship in 2014.

The league named Miracle right-hander Tom Hackimer as the Pitcher of the Week for July 3-9. During that span he appeared in four games, recording two wins and one save. In six innings of work the sidearmer allowed one hit and seven strikeouts.

He is the first Miracle pitcher to earn the honor this season. Miracle position players Max Murphy and Chris Paul earned Player of the Week honors in April and May, respectively.
