Commission proclamation declares Lee County a Purple Heart County

On June 20, the Lee County Board of County Commissioners, chaired by John Manning, adopted a resolution proclaiming Lee County as n official Purple Heart County.

Commander Jack Wagner of Chapter 696 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart in Southwest Florida expressed his appreciation to the County Commission for the resolution.

"That is such an honor to be a member of such an elite group of heroes," Wagner said. "Our heroes don't wear capes, they wear dog tags."

He noted that Lee County has always supported the men and women who have served or are serving their country in the armed forces.

The city of Cape Coral was proclaimed a Purple Heart City by the mayor and City Council on May 23, 2015.

"That within our entire veteran community here in Southwest Florida we have so many to be proud of for their sacrifices to this great nation," Wagner said.

Wagner recognized such Purple Heart veterans as Bert Kurland, a retired colonel who served 27 years in the Army and another 22 years in the State Department, who was first wounded in the Philippines in 1945 during World War II, and again in combat as a Special Forces commander in Vietnam; Dudley Middleton, who was wounded serving in the Korean War; Bill Dismukes, a retired colonel who was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam and wounded when his aircraft was shot down by an RPG (rocket propelled grenade); and Michael Araujo, a Mariner High School graduate who was severly wounded by an IED (improvised explosive device) in Afghanistan in 2009.

Wagner added, "There are so many more not mentioned in our ranks of The Military Order of the Purple Heart here in Southwest Florida whose stories tell of their heroic actions in combat that wear their Purple Heart proudly."
