June 20, 2017
By TIFFANY REPECKI (trepecki@breezenewspapers.com) , Cape Coral Daily Breeze

Calling all skaters and all bikers - even scooters - to Cape Coral's Eagle Skate Park!

Today from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., the city will host its annual Go Skate Day in conjunction with the nationally-recognized Go Skateboarding Day. Eduardo Ruiz, recreational specialist for the park and William "Bill" Austen Youth Center, noted that the city has been putting on the event for years.

"Every year we do it," he said.

For the national campaign, skate parks countrywide are open to the public for free.

"Everyone will be free to come in," Ruiz said. "Skaters, bikers and scooters can ride for free."

"We're trying to mix it up and give the opportunity to everyone," he added.

Last year, only about 20 youth showed up because it rained that day.

"Usually, we get about 70 kids daily," Ruiz said.

"Hopefully, they all show up tomorrow," he added on Tuesday.

Starting at 10 a.m., a deejay will perform for the crowd.

"We're going to have music to enjoy," Ruiz said.

The following contests are planned throughout the day:

* 10 a.m.: Best trick on rails and boxes

* noon: Best trick over six stairs

* 2 p.m.: Best continuous tricks over a five- to seven-minute period

* 4 p.m.: Best trick on a four-foot quarter-half pipe

* 6 p.m.: Best trick on a hip ramp

Ruiz noted that first, second and third place prizes will be given away in each contest.

"First place is going to get a free skateboard," he said. "Second place will get a free week's pass."

The third place winners will get to pick from a bunch of goodies, like T-shirts and hats.

"We're going to have free giveaways, we're going to have free passes," Ruiz said.

"Everyone that comes in will sign a list, and we'll choose one randomly to win," he added.

Ruiz estimated that the door prizes will be given away every 30 minutes.

Over the last year, the park has added two new skate ramps.

"They can try those out," he said.

Ruiz noted that there are also new products for sale, like scooters and skateboards.

"The people that come out, they're going to see a different park," he said.

Food and drinks will be available at the on-site concession stand.
