With a tournament-opening win under its belt, the Florida South-Western State softball team was set to do battle late Thursday afternoon against Lake Land (Illinois) in round two of the 2017 NJCCA National Tournament in St. George, Utah, at the Canyons Complex.

The third-seeded Buccaneers, who lead the nation with 62 wins on the year, won their opening game Wednesday night with a 10-2 run-rule victory over Indian Hills, while Lake Land hung on to defeat Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, 6-5.

In the win over Indian Hills, FSW was led by Taylor Collins' big night at the plate. Collins went 2-for-3 with a pair of homers, six RBIs and two runs scored.

Also contributing big in the win were Marta Fuentes, who went 2 for 2 with a run scored and a stolen base; Mikenzie Vaughn, who finished 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored; and Riley Russell, Kayla Rangiawha and Christian Quinn, who each went 1 for 3 on the night.

Emily Cummings, coming in as a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the fifth inning, launched a three-run double to left centerfield to give the Bucs the run-rule victory.

With a win over Lake Land, the Buccaneers would move on to the quarterfinals to face the winner of the No. 7 San Jacinto-South (42-19) and No. 2 Salt Lake (48-6) game today at 2 p.m. With a loss, FSW would have had to play again Thursday at 9:30 p.m. in an elimination game against the No. 12 Wallace State (39-17) / No. 13 North Central Texas (41-25) winner.

Eleventh-seeded Lake Land (Illinois) had won 21 of its last 22 games entering Thursday afternoons battle. Samantha Valentine leads the team with a .483 batting average to go with five home runs and 54 RBIs. Lake Land has 12 players with at least one homer, led by Madison Boone's 10. Emily Oestreich leads the pitching staff with a 31-3 record and a 1.62 ERA and 269 strikeouts.
