Family celebrates 30 years of ownership at Thirsty’s

February 3, 2017
By CHUCK BALLARO (news@breezenewspapers.com) , Cape Coral Daily Breeze

Roger McHose had a dream, and not only did he make it come true, but he passed it along to the next generation.

The McHoses have made Thirsty's Restaurant a part of their family and yours for the past 30 years, and they are looking forward to 30 more, offering good comfort food and good prices.

Thirsty's opened in 1981 at its current location at 4835 Vincennes St. under another owner. In 1987, when the place became available, Roger and Carol McHose, who had been coming to Florida regularly for vacation, jumped at the opportunity.

"It was a dream of my father-in-law's to own a restaurant. He had a dry cleaning business in New Jersey, and he sold it, came down here and opened his restaurant," said Jody McHose, who owns Thirsty's today with her husband, Daniel.

Daniel and Jody bought the establishment from their parents in 1997, when Roger became too ill to continue running it. He passed away last April.

"I had worked here for many years and had a snack bar. When (Roger) couldn't do it anymore, that's when we ended up buying it," Jody said. "Once we stepped in, they stepped out, but we didn't change anything."

One of the things that didn't change was the food and the friendly atmosphere, not to mention the staff that has been there for years, some dating back more than 20 years.

Jody said that is one of the secrets of staying around for so long, even if it isn't all that fancy.

"How many restaurants do you go to where the table next to you will have a conversation with you?" Jody said. "People feel like they're home here, like we're family. We have a lot of regulars."

Thirsty's provides freshly made, homestyle cooking at reasonable prices, simple comfort food they way you would have it at home. Lunch specials are usually priced under $8.

Among the current specials include prime rib on Monday and Saturday nights and lobster tail with crabmeat stuffing and two sides for $19.95.

Other specials include fried chicken on Monday for $9.95, stuffed fish on Tuesday, pot luck on Wednesday, Thursday is baked ham and Friday is fish, to go with all the other specials they put on the board.

Thirsty's is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for lunch and Monday through Saturday 4 to 8:30 p.m. for dinner.
