Mariner routs Sebring in Region 5A-3 semifinals

Mariner broke it open early and coasted to a 64-40 victory at Sebring Tuesday night in the Region 5A-3 semifinal playoffs.

The win advances the Tritons (21-8) to the regional finals Saturday night at home.

The Tritons used a 15-5 run in the second quarter to open a nice cushion at halftime, them padded the lead with a 20-12 advantage in the third quarter to seal the victory.

Rodney Hunter led the Tritons with 21 points and seven rebounds. Kaleb Darrett added 13 points and Chris Carpenter 12. Isaiah Darrett contributed eight rebounds to the cause.

"We pretty much controlled the tempo and did a good job with our pressure defense to wear them down," said Tritons coach James Harris.


Cape Coral 8, Immokalee 0: Matt Richey doubled and drove in two runs to spark Cape Coral's shutout victory at Immokalee on Tuesday.

Jarid Laukaitis contributed two hits while Justin Slater and Robert Becker added base hits for the Seahawks. Kyle Arjona (2-0) notched the win on the mound with six innings of one-hit ball and striking out 14 batters. Laukaitis struck out two in his one inning of relief.

The Seahawks (2-2) host Riverdale on Thursday.

Mariner 10, Lely 0: Luis Ferrer allowed one hit over five innings and struck out six to record his second victory on the mound and help Mariner shut out Lely on Tuesday.

Nick Gallant and Enrique Morales contributed two base hits and an RBI for the Tritons. Logan Hanick, Jake Milos-Scovronek and Gallant stroked doubles.

The Tritons (4-0) play at Immokalee on Friday.


Cape Coral 7, Immokalee 3: Winning pitcher Makenzie Buss allowed two base hits and helped her own cause with two hits and two runs at the place to earn Cape Coral a victory Tuesday at Immokalee.

Mikinzi Ferran scored and drove in a run with a single for the Seahawks (2-2), who host Riverdale on Thursday.

Bishop Verot 15, Gateway Charter 0: Chandler Smith delivered with three hits and three runs batted-in Tuesday to help push Bishop Verot to a three-inning mercy-rule victory.

Jessy McLean blasted a three-run home run for the Vikings to back Erin Kyle's three perfect innings on the mound with five strikeouts. The Vikings (4-1) host Tampa Catholic on Friday.
