In October Mariner's wrestling team captain came up with the team's slogan for the year - "Success isn't given ... it's earned.

This weekend the Tritons earned their first regional wrestling title at Tampa Berkeley Prep. The Tritons scored 138.5 to edge Indian Rocks Christian's 133.5 and Dunedin's 130 to win the 39-team region championship. The Tritons qualified seven wresltlers for the state tournament next weekend in Lakeland.

The Tritons were led by senior Alejandro Lopez, the champion of the 220-pound weight class. Lopez improved to 34-1 on the year.

"It was a team effort. The coaches pushed us to achieve our potential,' said Lopez.

Seniors Carrick Brennan (170), Russell Panos (285), and sophomore Keaton Koselke finished second. Koselke lost a close finals match to two-time state champion Donavon Hough of Tampa Prep.

Finishing third for the Tritons were senior Zach Fouch and juniors Ashton Plourde (152), and G.G. Dattalico (120). Freshman Kelvin Gonzalez scored a key pin in the wrestlebacks

"Our kids have worked hard since last spring. They have put in the time in the wrestling room, weight room, track, going to camps pushing themselves to improve all year," said Tritons coach Dave Phillips.

Oasis sophomore Greg Kremski wrestled tough, but came up just shy of qualifying for the state tournament.
