A 13-year Cape Coral resident and professional dancer has opened her own studio in Fort Myers.

Christine Carrillo opened the Principal Dancer Academy at 2084 Beacon Manor Drive this week due to "popular demand" from private lesson students looking to improve their skills.

Carrillo's dance background is extensive.

"I have been a professional dancer with the world renowned Hubbard Street Dance Company," she said in a prepared statement announcing her new enterprise. "I have performed on the Barbara B. Mann stage and the Philharmonic in Naples with the dance company. I danced with Hubbard Street for 13 years. In the 13 years at Hubbard, I traveled extensively throughout the world. Some of my travels included Jerusalem, Singapore, South America, Switzerland, Germany, Italy and Poland, to name a few."

During her tenure with Hubbard Street she had the opportunity to work with some of the most prestigious choreographers and instructors. They include Twyla Tharp, Jiri Kylian (Netherlands Dans Company), David Parsons (Parsons Dance Company), Alonzo King (Lines Dance Company LA), Randy Duncan (Joseph Holms Dance Company), Daniel Ezralow, Margo Sappington (Ballet Met) and Harrison McEldowney.

She has performed as principal dancer with the famous Lyric Opera House in Chicago, in Aida and Midsummer's Marriage, as well as as principal dancer for Civic Ballet of Chicago as guest artist, which includes the Nutcracker's Sugar Plum Fairy and Snow Queen.

"I also starred as a special guest artist with Civic Ballet to participate in Larry Long's Tango, and Lou Conte's Line Drive," Carrillo said.

Her additional credits include making an appearance at the Chicago Bulls halftime on ESPN.

The Principal Dancer Academy, which is accepting "serious students that wish to excel and be noticed in auditions" is open Monday-Saturday. During the week afternoon and evening hours start at 3:30 p.m. Saturday hours start at 9 a.m. with pre-ballet. Those interested also can call for appointments and times; private lessons are by appointment only.

Instructors include Megan Morrow from Fort Myers and Tomislav Vukovic from Cape Coral, who has an extensive background in dance from Europe. Carrillo also will invite her former colleagues and friends from Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, American Ballet Theater, New York City Ballet and Joffery Ballet to teach and hold master classes at her studio.

In addition, Carrillo has her certification in Zumba and will be offering Zumba classes, a Mommy and Me Ballet class and Dance Discovery.
