J. Paul Mewborn, 81, of Cape Coral died Nov. 27, 2013. A native of Atlanta, he was born May 25, 1932, son of Fay and Wilberth Mewborn. His stepmother was Pauline B. Mewborn.

His first job as a teenager was as an usher at the Plaza Theater in Atlanta. He graduated from Darlington Prep School, attended Georgia Tech and served in the Air Force during the Korean War. While living in Decatur, Ga., he was a member of the Decatur First Methodist Church where he thoroughly enjoyed singing in the choir.

He was working in Atlanta at Byron Brooke Stocks & Bonds and attending night school at Georgia State College when he met Joan Buchanan, who he married in 1957. They moved to Miami where he was branch manager for Biscayne Federal Savings, and later a mortgage banker for Florida Bond & Mortgage. He graduated from the University of Miami in 1964 and has always been an avid 'Canes fan - along with the Miami Dolphins and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. He was a beloved husband, father, Little League coach and trusted friend. Always politically active, he was the first president of the North Dade Republican Club.

In 1976, his family relocated to Cape Coral where he worked as a mortgage banker and in real estate - his favorite job - in a city he truly loved. After semi-retirement, he worked at The Forest Country Club. A staunch and active supporter of the military, he belonged to the Korean War Veterans Assocation, #155, the VFW and the American Legion.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Joan; children, Michael Keith (Amy), Karen Leigh Gaston (Dave) and Kevin David; grandchildren, Rachel, Ryan and Paris Mewborn and Michael Austin Pac. In addition to the immediate family, survivors include his sisters, Helene Mewborn of Decatur, Ga., Nancy Burton of Lookout Mountain, Tenn., and Gay Jarrard of Stockbridge, Ga., along with their families; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the Veterans Foundation, 4820 Leonard St., Cape Coral, Friday, Jan. 24, at 3 p.m.

If desired, donations may be made in Paul's memory to KWV #155, 1101 S.W. 54th Lane, Cape Coral, FL 33914, or to Hope Hospice.
