Cape Coral Daily Breeze

Leslie J. (Benson) Kautto, 68, a Cape Coral resident for the last year, formerly of Bellingham, Wash.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Oshkosh, Wis.; and Omaha, Neb., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, in Cape Coral. She was born Aug. 20, 1945, in Seattle, Wash., to George and Josephine Davis, now deceased.

She was of the Christian faith. She never met a stranger; she struck up a conversation with everyone she met. She was a strong person she raised her son as a single parent and also fought inflammatory breast cancer for nine years, three times longer than the average person survives it. She was adamant about educating other women about the deadly disease and her grandchildren on the importance of education and did so every chance she got. She also participated in a long-term, rigorous gene study in order to hopefully help generations to come fight the deadly disease.

Over the years she travelled to many exotic locales and went on many adventures with her husband, Ken. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed cross country skiing, scuba diving, boating and more recently overseeing the renovation of her and Ken's retirement home in Cape Coral, where they enjoyed the sunshine, gulf and canals.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 17 years, Ken Kautto of Cape Coral; her son, Steve (Melissa) Benson of Leesburg, Fla.; two grandchildren, Alexa and Tyler Benson; a sister, Jane Tyndale (Abramson) and husband Jim of Lake Havasu, Ariz.; special friends, Beth and Paul Hamilton of Omaha, Neb., Don and Barb Holmes of Bellingham, Wash., and Ernie and Trudee Judge, also of Bellingham; as well as numerous Canadian in-laws and family members in the greater Seattle area.

Along with her parents, she was also preceded in death by two children, William Benson in 1965 and Jeanette Benson in 1974; as well as her brother, Sidney Davis in 1980.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 13, at Hope Hospice, 2430 Diplomat Parkway, East, Cape Coral, with Chaplain Daniel Antle officiating.
