Cape boys slip past Wave 2-1

Despite several weeks of inactivity due to the holiday break, the Cape Coral Seahawks picked up where they left off last year.

The Seahawks got the game-winning goal in the final two minutes Tuesday night to slip past Fort Myers 2-1.

Jonathan Jimenez scored the Seahawks' initial goal in the first half off an assist by Miguel Martinez. That 1-0 advantage lasted 20 minutes into the second half when the Green Wave tied the match.

Martinez took a crossing pass from Eli Vega at the far post and slipped it under the Wave keeper for the winning tally to lift the Seahawks. Austin Lachmann made seven saves in the net to preserve the win.

The Seahawks (15-1) play at Riverdale Wednesday night.

Bishop Verot 2, St. Petersburg Catholic 1: The Bishop Verot Vikings boys soccer team improved its record to 11-0-1 on the season with a 2-1 victory over St. Petersburg Catholic Tuesday.Scoring goals for Bishop Verot were Quinten Powers and Dillon Niemeth.

The Vikings' next game is Thursday at North Port High School. Gametime is 7 p.m.

Girls Basketball

First Baptist 42, Mariner 40: After leading for the entire game, the Mariner Tritons came up short at the end with a loss to First Baptist Tuesday night at Mariner.

Pharrah Milan led the Tritons with nine points and Mariah Ortiz added eight.

"We had a chance to win it with a field goal in the final 12 seconds, but turnovers hurt us," said Tritons coach Jeremy Dearinger.

The Tritons (6-13) host Cape Coral on Thursday.
