Authorities are searching for a possible witness to a fatal crash Tuesday in North Fort Myers.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office wants to speak to the driver of the yellow SUV, possibly a Ford, who may have seen the accident at about noon at the intersection of Business US 41 and Powell Drive.

According to officials, preliminary details indicate that Joseph Recarey, 69, of 1013 N.E. 32nd Lane, Cape Coral, was southbound on US 41 in a 1997 Corvette when he entered the left turn lane to Powell, behind the SUV. After coming to a stop and waiting a period of time, Recarey pulled to the right of the SUV.

He went around the SUV and began to turn left onto Powell, officials said. The Corvette then collided into a 2007 Honda headed north on US 41, driven by Patricia Durocher, of North Fort Myers.

Durocher and a passenger, Ruth Babski, 89, of 3121 Old Farmhouse Drive, North Fort Myers, sustained injuries and were transported to the trauma center at Lee Memorial Hospital.

Babski was pronounced dead at the hospital, officials reported. Durocher was treated and released.

Due to the nature of the incident, a traffic homicide detective was assigned to investigate.

The driver of the yellow SUV, or anyone who may know the identity of the SUV's driver, is asked to contact the Lee County Sheriff's Office Traffic Unit at (239) 477-1636.

The investigation continues.
